Our Work With Sri Rakum School for the Blind
MPS is proud to be working with the Sri Rakum School for the Blind in India. The school was opened in June 1998 by Acharya Sri Rakum and was founded for children who were born blind or visually impaired. Coming from families living below the poverty line, these children were shunned, denied a childhood and the opportunity to grow into normal adults. The school strives to provide the best education for boys and girls who are blind. Children from distant villages and tribal regions come to Rakum where they are welcomed with open and loving arms.
Caring for over 500 children in India
The Rakum School started in a small apartment in suburban Bangalore with a small number of students. As word got around, a building nearby was converted into a hostel and from then on, the School grew. Today, Rakum and his staff of samaritans manage three schools in Indiranagar, Devanahalli and Arkavathy Layout in Bangalore. They serve as a home and a safe place for over 500 under-privileged boys and girls, both sighted and visually impaired, aged from 2 ½ to 26. Here, they get food, clothing, shelter and education. More importantly, they get love, understanding and a helping hand till they learn to stand on their own two feet.
